Dezeen Awards 2021

“It is a rare occurrence for a designer to be given the opportunity to rethink and reinvent a category of vehicle, this has been the responsibility given to us by Carl-Magnus and Kjell the founder’s of Volta Trucks. The team of designers at Astheimer lead by Russell, hand in hand with the growing engineering team at Volta, have not let this opportunity pass us by, delivering an innovative architecture with a pure uncompromising design, that will make cities safer, keep the air cleaner and will make deliveries more efficiently.” – find out more about Volta here.

Aircraft Interiors Magazine

When Aircraft Interiors International invited Astheimer to rethink the future of front row monuments we were happy to get involved.  Drawing on our experience in luxury yacht, home, car and hotel design the ‘cocoon’ concept was created.

The Future of the Automobile

There is no doubt that the future of the automobile will be dominated by electric vehicles, Volvo has announced that by 2019 all their cars will be electric or hybrid, Porsche has stated that their future is electric, full stop, and electric power is increasingly used in motorsport because of its performance advantages.  There is also an inevitability of autonomous vehicles, although the speed of adoption and type of integration is less certain.

British Design Shop – Design and Craft Hand in Hand

The Astheimer team have been working on two new collections for the British Design Shop.  The first samples have started to arrive……

Each individual piece that is created for the British Design Shop is shaped by the here and now, bringing distinctive style to everyday living. But created to last by blending enduring elegance with a respect for time honoured methods and carefully chosen, quality materials.

Designers and craftsmen working intuitively together to make classic designs of the future.

CES Las Vegas 2017 – A Designer’s Perspective

50 years of CES, my 5th consecutive year, lots of cool stuff, but no standouts, this year was a year of transition – a bit like the world we live in!    It is always exciting to see the technologies that will change our lives:

Voice controlled everything, autonomous vehicles, robots, drones, 3 screened laptops, holographic head up displays, super thin TV’s and smart everything – hairbrushes, beds, toothbrushes, dog collars and even smart breast pumps!

It is fascinating to get a glimpse into the future and to the fantastic opportunities technology can bring to our lives, VR assisted medical devices, software that optimises materials and shapes to minimise material use and maximise strength.

However there were too many examples, especially from the large corporations, where every possible technology was applied to every device they make, and it leaves you asking the question – is this technology really a help or is it making the appliance and our lives more complicated?
I hope you enjoy what I found interesting…

The First Driverless Cars

UK – MILTON KEYNES, 12th October, 2016. The first driverless two-seater cars carried passengers on a three-quarter-mile loop along a pedestrianised street in Milton Keynes. This was the first time in the UK the vehicles have been used outside tightly controlled test zones.

Oxbotica – linked Oxford University – provided the software which allowed the cars used in Milton Keynes to understand their surroundings. Astheimer design are proud to have designed and supplied enclosure parts to Oxbotica that were used to house the hardware installed into the cars.

Pole Position – Astheimer Design Nurburgring 24 Hour Race Trophy

Nurburgring, Germany – 27th May 2016. A new addition to the Nurburgring 24 Hours this year was the ‘Glickenhaus Trophy’, donated by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, proudly designed by Astheimer. Team Owner and über-enthusiast James Glickenhaus presented the trophy to the Maro Engel, who set the fastest lap time in the top 30 qualifying session, which included the involvement of Glickenhaus’s own SCG 003 #702 car.
